Two weeks later, while he was supposed to be on patrol, Jake climbed the outer wall and broke in through the back door. He went from room to room searching for Elsa. When he finally found her in one of the bedrooms, he was stunned and heartbroken. She was in an almost comatose condition. She didn’t even recognize him, just looked dazed and mumbled incoherently.

Her face was drawn, and it looked like she’d lost 15 pounds.

She mumbled “Jay” once, but no matter what he did, she never did it again.

Jake was devastated. It was the worst day of his life.

Her nurse was sympathetic. She told him how Gerard was injecting Elsa with narcotics and mind-altering drugs to keep her from escaping and make her more docile. And that Gerard constatly called her a “whore” for living with Jake.

“He always said bad things about you,” she said. “After that, Elsa wouldn’t talk to him, said she hated him. But he didn’t stop. He kept saying you didn’t love her, just using her. And that you’d leave Germany without her.”

Although the nurse felt sorry for Elsa and Jake, she had to tell Gerard what Jake had done. If Gerard ever found out Jake had broken in and she hadn’t told him, he’d fire her and her husband, who worked at the pharmaceutical company.

When she told Gerard, he became extremely angry. He flung Elsa’s favorite tea cup to the floor, shattering it into small pieces. Then he told the nurse not to read to Elsa anymore and to throw out her favorite cookies.

The next morning, Gerard charged into MP headquarters and filed a complaint with the MP Commander. Colonel Nicholson was shocked. Jake was one of his best MPs.

He pulled Jake off patrol and gave him a desk job. Then he worked on getting him transferred to another unit.

The two most important things in Jake’s life—Elsa and being an MP— had been stripped from him. They were lost forever. But there was one thing he hadn’t lost. The power to seek and mete out justice.

He reminded himself of something Al once told him. “You know what justice is? It’s very simple. It’s getting what you truly deserve.”

Jake Gertner had no doubt what Gerard Michel deserved.
